Melanes

Melanes

Melanes is one of the oldest villages of the island and is located 8 km from the port of Naxos. The village's history goes back into centuries and samples of this are the ancient schools of sculpture and the famous Kouros of Melanes, made in the 6th century BC.

A very significant monument of the village and the Mediterranean is the Jesuits Convent. It is a medieval building, dating around 1680 AD and was a summer residence of the order of the Jesuit Monks. The convent is well preserved and awaits the visitors to admire it.

At Melanes, there are many small taverns with traditional food and small cafes to enjoy some of the delicious traditional coffee. Do not miss tasting the chicken in wine sauce, which is a specialty of the village.
